PELA SOUTH OF

Following their debut single ‘You Got Me’, South London duo PELA returns with hypnagogic alt-electronic track ‘South Of’. Drawing on influences from some of the electronic scene’s finest names, such as KAYTRANADA, Cocteau Twins and James Blakes, PELA’s production side Olly Shelton has skillfully crafted an intricate soundscape of shimmering textures, romantic keys and a grounding bass line. All of this is layered with the lustrous pop vocals of Hannah Coombes. Due to the refined nature of ‘South Of’, you may be surprised to hear that this was in fact the first song that Shelton and Coombes wrote together and what subsequently sparked the idea of PELA. Here they reflect on the fated first session: “We landed on a particular sound world, existing on the intersection of our musical influences, which created the driving beats, flirtatious vocal duet and climatic ending that you hear.” With two tracks under their belt and a strong sonic identity throughout, we look forward to what else PELA have in the bank for us. - Hannah Thacker
